The Best Places to Visit IN Africa in January

January is honestly one of our favorite times to explore some of Africa's most stunning destinations. Whether you're escaping the winter chill or diving into the continent's vibrant summer, these spots offer something for everyone. Here are our favorite places to visit in January:

1. Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

This bustling port city on the Indian Ocean blends modernity with rich history. As Tanzania's largest city, Dar es Salaam offers everything from vibrant local markets to serene beaches.

I enjoy heading to Kivukoni Fish Market, where you’ll witness the chaos of fishermen unloading their daily catch. Definitely explore Makumbusho Village Museum for a glimpse into Tanzania’s diverse cultures. And if you’re craving some relaxation, I would  hop on a ferry or charter a boat to to Bongoyo Island for crystal-clear waters and sun-soaked beaches.

January is the ideal time to visit, with warm weather and the dry season in full swing. Whether you're indulging in fresh seafood or enjoying the city's energetic vibe, Dar es Salaam is a gateway to the beauty of East Africa.

2. Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town shines in January, with its sunny summer weather and breathtaking landscapes. The city is nestled between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean and has it all: natural wonders, rich history, and vibrant nightlife.

I would start my day with a cable car ride up Table Mountain for panoramic views, or hike for an unforgettable sunrise and to get my steps in. In the afternoon I would check out the colorful Bo-Kaap neighborhood for its unique architecture and delicious Cape Malay cuisine. I always try to end my day at a restaurant or right on Camps Bay Beach, where the sunsets are simply unmatched.

Cape Town is also a a great stop for wine lovers such as myself. I would rent a car and head to Stellenbosch or Franschhoek where the vineyards are perfect for a laid-back afternoon. January’s warm days and cool evenings make this city a must-visit destination.

3. Lamu, Kenya

One of my favorite destinations is a hidden gem off the Kenyan coast. Lamu is the epitome of laid-back charm. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts narrow streets, stunning Swahili architecture, and a rich cultural heritage that dates back centuries.

I love morning strolls in Lamu Town to discover its markets, mosques, and ancient stone houses. The island is car-free, so transportation will likely be by dhow boat or donkey, both extremely unique experiences. January offers perfect weather for exploring the pristine beaches of Shela or taking a sunset sail on a traditional dhow. I really enjoy the  slow pace and warm hospitality that Lamu provides after the busy holiday season.
