Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

There are only three countries in the entire world where you can go Mountain Gorilla trekking. We knew that when we visited Rwanda this had to be at the top of our bucket list!

We left our hotel in Kigali at 4am and headed to the Volcanoes National Park, where were met by our guides and placed into groups based on our level of hiking. We chose a beginner/medium as we didn’t want to hike for 8 hours and we only had one day to spare on this trip. We grabbed a cup of coffee from Kivu Noir and set of on our drive to the head of the trail.

We trekked through the mud and forest with our walking sticks and guides for about 2 and half hours before we met until the Sabinyo gorilla family. We spent one hour hanging with the endangered mountain gorillas and observing them in their natural habitat. It was hilarious to see how human some of their mannerisms are, and the evident family structures you can see in their interactions.

We saw the whole family, a silver-back alpha male, females, teenagers and even two little baby gorillas. The whole experience was surreal and brought tears to our eyes with the beauty of the back drop of the forest the hills and these incredible creatures within an arms distance from us.
